Resources
Finding the right words for your experience is hard. These resources were chosen with that in mind — not generic family therapy content, but material that actually speaks to the complexity of growing up straight in an LGBTQ+ family.
Why these resources are different
Most mental health and family resources for people with LGBTQ+ parents are written from the perspective of the LGBTQ+ parent, or for LGBTQ+ children. They focus on acceptance, celebration, and allyship. Those resources have their place — but they don't speak to the specific experience of being a straight adult who grew up navigating a complicated family dynamic.
The resources here were chosen because they take the child's perspective seriously. They don't assume the experience was simple or uniformly positive. They don't require you to have resolved your feelings before you're allowed to have them. And they don't treat complexity as a sign of something wrong with you.
Some of these resources are academic. Some are personal essays. Some are practical guides. All of them were selected because they say something true about what it actually costs to grow up as a straight child in an LGBTQ+ family — and what it takes to make sense of that as an adult.
These resources are a starting point, not a complete picture. If you've found something genuinely useful that isn't here, we want to hear about it.
